Community Outreach Update for 12.28.09

December 29, 2009

COMheader0Happy New Year from Community Outreach!

We wanted to let you know about two upcoming opportunities to serve to start off 2010 serving God!

womenshelterThe first opportunity is THIS Sunday, January 3rd from 7-8:30 pm. Shoreline’s Women’s Shelter Visits are a great way to encourage and befriend women in transition. Women who attend these events are consistently blessed by their time spent at the shelter.  See the Community Outreach booth on Sunday morning for details and directions.

The second opportunity is one the whole family can enjoy! January’s Serve Saturday will take place on Saturday, January 9th from 9 am -2 pm in the Fellowship Center. We will be making Valentine’s cards for delivery in late January for troops overseas and in February for local people who need a little love in their life.

On a separate note, Shoreline’s Food Pantry and Clothes Closet will be only be open on Tuesday, December 29th this week due to the New Year’s holiday.

For more information on these and other opportunities to serve, please contact Megan Huff or Debra Federico or call 831.655.0100 x338.

This week’s question is: What if I don’t understand God?

Have you ever felt your life is unfair? Have you ever questioned God? Well, guess what, you’re not the only one! After all the terrible things that happened to Job he questioned God too. And guess what! God answered him with a few questions of his own! Read them in Job 38-41. GO AHEAD I DARE YOU!

Finished reading? Tough questions huh? Choose your favorite verse out of this passage, and draw a picture of what you read. Hang your picture in your room to remind you that God knows everything and can do everything.

No matter what happens, we don’t need to question God- whatever he has planned for his people is best!

Men’s Ministry finishes strong!

December 23, 2009

2009 saw significant growth in important areas in Men’s Ministry. Pete Lee moved into the role of Director of Men’s ministry and Abraham Wilson the assistant Director. Others given official roles are Bill Ragland as Secretary/Recorder and Dave Lays Outreach liason. Pastor Dennis continues to provide Pastoral oversight.

The Men and Women’s Ministries combined to hold a first annual Men’s and Women’s Breakfast, featuring great food, fellowship and insightful sharing from Pastor Kevin and Sherry Harney. It went so well that plans are already underway to make this event bigger and better next year.

In the first week of December Men’s hosted an Appreciation Dinner for those who helped with the Ministry activities throughout the year. With over 70 in attendance, the dinner was a resounding success and a beautiful opportunity to thank the many folks who help make this ministry thrive.

There are four different ongoing Men’s Bible Studies currently meeting; if you’re looking we probably have one that fits you! Saturday mornings, 7am at the church, Wednesday mornings 7am in Salinas (email Men’s ministry for location). Also mid week is a 7am study on Tuesday which is repeated at 6:30am Wednesday. These two studies are inductive and deductive. Diving deep into Scripture, the focus is on what the Bible says to us considering context, culture and content. Coffee is free! Pastor Dennis teaches the latter two.

If you’d like to get involved or just check in with someone from Men’s Ministry, check out the booth in the courtyard and/or email Pete Lee or Pastor Dennis at Shoreline.

What are some verses about being born again?

We looked at John 3: 3 already, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

Here are some other verses to look up:

John 3:7, “you must be born again…”

1 Peter 1:3, “we have been born again…”

1 Peter 1:23, “you have been born again…”

Colossians 3:10, “be renewed as you learn to know…”

If you want to look up even more verses about this or another topic you can always look in the back of your Bible to see if it has a concordance.

A concor-what? A concordance is actually a lot like a dictionary. It’s an alphabetical listing of important words that you can find in your Bible. Just use it like you would use a dictionary at school. It will tell you scriptures you can look up that uses that word. If your Bible doesn’t have a concordance you can look up verses using key words on different websites like www.biblegateway.com or www.biblestudytools.com.
