Community Outreach Update for 1.27.10

January 27, 2010

COMheader0Shoreline Community Outreach wants to let you know what opportunities to serve are available around our community. We have a lot going on and we wanted to keep you informed.

shorelinelogoBlackWEB0Coming up THIS Saturday, January 30th , is Shoreline Clean-Up Day from 9 am- 2pm which helps us clean and maintain the facility for both visitors & members alike.  If you are able to help, please show up here at the church at 9 am.

As the year progresses, we learn of more and more opportunities to serve our surrounding community.  One of these opportunities is the opportunity to bless the residents of the women’s shelter we visit twice a month.  We have been asked to help refurbish a room of the house with the blessing of our Benevolence & Hope team. If you would like to donate to this project, please let us know.

Another opportunity coming our way soon is the Sea Otter Classic.  We are looking for volunteers for various activities helping out with these bicycle races. There are shifts from April 12th-18th and the shifts are 7 am-12 pm and 12 pm-6 pm.

That’s it for this week. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer for any of these opportunities to serve, please contact Megan Huff or Deb Federico, or call 831.655.0100 x338.

This week’s question is: How should I serve others?

We learned in class this week how Jesus served his disciples in an incredible way. You can read about it again in John 13: 1-17. Imagine having no paved roads or sidewalks and wearing sandals all the time! In Jesus’ time servants would wash people’s feet. It was a lowly job. But Jesus washed the disciples feet himself! He showed that we should serve others.

Grab an old towel and a permanent marker (get permission from your parents!) and write the name of a few people that you want to serve and why you want to serve them. You can hang the towel in your bathroom to remind you to follow through on your idea.

Then discuss these questions with your family:

Why was Jesus willing to be a servant?

Why does Jesus want us to follow his example of servanthood?

What are ways our family members can serve each other?

How can we encourage each other to remember to be servants?

Pray together to ask God to remind you to be willing and cheerful servants.

Memorize/Reflect- “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” (1 Cor. 12:26)

Reflection- Do I see the church more as a place to get what I want, a place to serve and invest, or a healthy balance of the two?

Discussion- What is one of your spiritual gifts and how are you using it to bless God and others?

Prayer Direction- Lord, unleash every person who calls Shoreline their church home to serve by using their gifts.

Outreach Update for 1.19.10

January 20, 2010

COMheader0Community Outreach is as busy as ever serving our surrounding community & we wanted to let you know what’s going on with this thriving & dynamic ministry.

This past weekend we were able to bless two areas of our community with a Convalescent Home visit & a Women’s Shelter visit.  THANK YOU to all of the wonderful volunteers with hearts of gold for these deserving people in our community. You are a true blessing to those around you.

This weekend there are no Shoreline-sponsored events but there are two organizations which we support that are having events.  The first of these events is an “All Women’s Ball” with all proceeds going to the Women’s Shelter which we visit.

TCHSThe second is an open house at the newly-established Trinity Christian High School. If you have a high schooler and are looking to give them a quality, Christian education, please consider attending this event on Saturday, January 23rd from 2-4 pm on their campus.

Next Saturday, January 30th, from 9 am-2 pm is the first Shoreline Clean-Up Day for 2010. Join us at Shoreline for some “inreach” as we clean & maintain the church facilities for both visitors & members alike.

If you are interested in these or any other opportunities to serve, please email Megan Huff or Deb Federico, or call 831.655.0100 x338.

Anchor Bay Diving Deep #18

January 17, 2010

This week’s question is: What do I do when I have a disagreement with someone in my church?

Great question because just like in any family, there are going to be times when you disagree with someone at church. Read Matthew 18: 15-20.

This outlines how to handle disagreements.

Step 1. Go talk to that person one on one. The temptation is to talk bad about someone when we argue with them but that’s not what God wants. He wants us to love each other. Most of the time this solves the problem since most arguments are because of misunderstandings.

Step 2.  If the person doesn’t want to listen to you or if step one doesn’t solve the problem then you can get someone else (someone who is a mature Christian is best) to talk to that person with you. Having another person there can help both of you see the other person’s point of view.

Step 3. If there is still a problem then you can take it to a pastor.

Step 4. Still  not working? Verse 17 says to treat the person like a pagan or a tax collector. What does that mean? Basically, it means not to hang out with that person any more.

But that’s not the end of the story. Read Matthew 18: 21- 35. Its all about how to forgive your brothers or sisters.
