Growth Group Discussion:
Video Based Questions

    1. Are there any relationships that are flourishing in your life right now? Are there others that are not going as well? How could this relate to your relationship with God?
    2. When was a time when you felt close to God as a friend?
    3. Do you think you have a healthy respect and reverence for God?
    4. What reactions do we see from those who actually encountered God (Isaiah, John the Apostle, Moses)? What does this say about the way we should view him?
      • Scripture: Isaiah 6:1-7, Revelation 1:12-20, Exodus 3:2-3
    5. What do we risk when we eliminate the idea of God’s holiness and awe and only focus on God’s love and friendship?

Sermon Based Questions

    1. Tell about how you came to know who God is and who taught you about a relationship with God.
    2. Tell about when you entered a relationship with God and how your relationship with God has impacted your life.
    3. Read: Matthew 6:25-34. What does it look like when we are “Seeking first God’s kingdom and His righteousness”? What happens when seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness becomes a low priority in our life?
    4. What are some of the things in this world and life that can get in the way of us seeking God’s kingdom first? What is one thing you need to set aside or focus on less so that you can seek God’s kingdom with greater passion and intentionality?
    5. What is a way you can love God more in one of these areas of your life:
      • In the time you spend with God?
      • In the time you devote to studying, reading, and learning from the Bible?
      • In the way you serve others in the name of Jesus?
      • In how you guard your mind by cutting off unhealthy and ungodly images, thoughts, and ideas?

Bible Verses and Quotes for thought:

Hebrews 4:14-16 – Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Psalm 111:10 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.

“Obviously, to be in the fear of the Lord is not to be scared of the Lord, even though the Hebrew word has overtones of respect and awe. ‘Fear’ in the Bible means to be overwhelmed, to be controlled by something. To fear the Lord is to be overwhelmed with wonder before the greatness of God and his love. It means that, because of his bright holiness and magnificent love, you find him ‘fearfully beautiful.’ That is why the more we experience God’s grace and forgiveness, the more we experience a trembling awe and wonder before the greatness of all that he is and has done for us. Fearing him means bowing before him out of amazement at his glory and beauty.” – Timothy Keller

Perfect love, we know, casteth out fear [1 John 4:18]. But so do several other things — ignorance, alcohol, passion, presumption, and stupidity. It is very desirable that we should all advance to that perfection of love in which we shall fear no longer; but it is very undesirable, until we have reached that stage, that we should allow any inferior agent to cast out our fear. – C.S. Lewis

In a world where we tend to be over-cautious about nearly everything, it’s no surprise that our obsession with safety can carry over to how we live our faith in the world. But it’s always been risky to follow God, and we are missing a vital part of our faith when we play it safe.

Community groups for our next 8-week sermon series, Reckless Faith, will begin the week of January 6.
