Back to school after summer vacation – what an exciting time for children as they look forward to their new classes, seeing friends, and shopping for school supplies! This is also a difficult time for many children in our community.
Did you know that in Monterey County:
- There are over 5,000 homeless students?
- More than one quarter of children live in poverty?
- Nearly 70% of students qualify and are enrolled in the Free/Reduced Price Meal Program?
(Based on the 2010-11 school year, the latest for which data is available)
We are partnering with Target to help the Seaside and Salinas Boys & Girls Clubs help children in need of backpacks in Monterey County by supplying them with backpacks filled with school supplies. We believe every child deserves to go to school prepared to learn! Our hope is that the children will see the love of God in us as we help them and will want to learn more about that love.
Our drive begins July 6th and will continue until July 27th.
We need donations of:
1. Backpacks (no red or blue)
2. Safe Scissors
3. 3 Ring Binders/Loose Leaf Paper
4. Colored Pencils/Crayons
5. Composition Books
6. Glue/Glue sticks
7. Erasers/Pencil Sharpeners
10. Pocket Folders/5 Tab Dividers
11. Construction Paper/Yellow Highlighter
12. Pocket Dictionary
Look for the Backpack Drive barrels around Shoreline Community Church. Or you can make an online donation here. Thank you for participating in this opportunity to help children succeed in school and for meeting a crucial need in our community!
If you would like to help assemble the backpacks and hand them out to the children at the Boys & Girls Clubs, join us on July 29th from 3:30-5:30p at the Boys & Girls Clubs in Seaside and Salinas.

4th of July Parade | July 4
Have you ever wanted to be in a parade? Here is your chance! Join us as we ride our bikes representing Shoreline Community Church in the Monterey City 4th of July Parade. We will be meeting in the parking lot of Federico’s (542 Abrego Street) to decorate our bikes at 7a. Sign up at the Community Outreach Booth on Sunday morning. Help us partner with Shelter Outreach Plus (facilitators of I-Help & Hamilton House) & Extended Family Ministry as we bless the apartments of the I-Help men with much-needed repairs, gardening, painting, plumbing, etc. These projects start out as a blessing to someone else, but by the time we are done, we are the ones who are blessed.
Meet at 3046 Lexington Court, Marina, on Saturday, June 7th, at 9a for bagels and donuts then on to beautifying the facility. Lunch will be provided, then back to doing God’s work. We hope to be done by 2p but if needed, you can stay longer if you wish.
