Meet our fearless leader, Ben Huey!
Ben sits quietly behind the mixing console, behind the scenes of Shoreline’s Sunday service, as well as other events. He has worked at Shoreline for six years, and is our Technical Director and founder of the Shoreline Production Team. His job encompasses everything from sound to broadcast video, as well as everything in between. He is quite patient and a tad quirky. But most importantly, he strives for excellence and inspires his team to do the same.
Ben has a vast array of experience in his field. He interned at a recording studio after obtaining his education at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences. Prior to all of this, he had mixed church audio since the 6th grade! While he was interning, Ben’s parents moved to the Peninsula and became members of Shoreline Community Church. They attended a new members dinner, where they began talking to Music Director, John Wineglass, and Pastor Ben Spangler. The Hueys mentioned their son’s experience in sound mixing, and Ben Spangler invited Ben H. to come mix audio for Shoreline one Sunday. Ben H. was then asked to come back on subsequent Sundays, and eventually began to officially mix Shoreline’s music. And the rest is history!
Ben enjoys participating in worship in his own way. He loves to experience other people worshipping when the music, lights and sound all come together, the song crescendos, and arms are lifted high as people forget themselves and focus entirely on the Lord.
When asked what he would do if he could do anything with his life, without limitation, he stated that he would do just what he’s doing now…helping to bring others into the presence of God, be it in worship, reflection, service, or gathering together.
Ben finds encouragement in the following verse: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)
Ben offers the following advice to anyone who may be considering volunteering for the Shoreline Production Team:
-It is easier than it looks.
-It is ok to make mistakes.
-We are all human–there is no way we can be exactly like Jesus because we aren’t Him!

“Headset School!”
A couple of issues were brought up during the third service today (05/06/2012), which provides us with a learning opportunity regarding PL (private line, or headset) communication and etiquette.
When I was first getting started in television production, newbies like me were often admonished for not observing proper headset procedure, usually with a terse “Hey! Headset school!”, implying that the offending party needed to go back and learn PL basics.
As we now have the “other” side of production (Lyrics, lighting, stage, etc) and programming (Bobbie) able to communicate with us on PL, it’s an ideal time to go over the best practices for headset etiquette. Some of this is already standard procedure for us, but is included for future additions to our ministry:
- The switcher is the only one who’s mic should be open at most times; other positions only to ask questions or for help.
- All persons should refrain from the following while their mic is open: eating, coughing, sneezing, placing your headset on the counter, and conversations not related to production. Close your mic if any of these are necessary.
- At least one person needs to remain on headset during the third service in case someone needs to communicate with the control room.
Furthermore, it was noted today that conversations (including mine) within the control room were audible in the main sanctuary, even with the control room doors closed. As Ben noted in our first production meeting, we need to be “ninjas” and as unnoticeable as possible in order to give the audience (and ourselves) as much of a distraction-free experience as we can provide.
While I don’t recommend hollering “headset school” to one another during future mishaps, let’s keep each other honest (politely) about proper PL etiquette.
In His Service,
Sean Kahuila

Thanks to Sean for a some great insight into how we can keep improving our area of service.
-Shoreline Production Team
I became a member of the Shoreline Production Team shortly before Christmas of this past year. There was such a flurry of activity in preparing for our celebration of Jesus’ birth. And what a celebration we had!
Our services were so moving, and I believe our Lord used our church and team to reach people for his glory. I think that even the demon spiders that traveled onto our campus through the Christmas trees, and that wreaked havoc on our lighting system, were used for His honor. If nothing else, they brought us together in prayer against spiritual warfare.
The time from Christmas to Good Friday and Easter seemed to go by in the blink of an eye. Suddenly preparations were being made to honor Jesus’ death on the cross and then to celebrate the greatest day in history…His resurrection! Our hopes and prayers were that many would come to know Him this Easter.
Pastor Kevin explained it so well. Tetelestai…Paid in Full…It Is Finished! Jesus’ death on the cross paid for our sin, made us a way to be close to God, allowed us entrance into heaven, and redeemed us for eternity! I cannot fully comprehend the depth of His love to do such a thing for me, for all of us who believe.
I had the pleasure of running lyrics for the Easter services and hearing the message five times. Although I knew from the slides what would be talked about next, I gleaned new insights each time I heard the sermon. The Lord spoke to my heart through Pastor Kevin and I hung on every word.
I feel so lucky to be a part of this ministry. I feel so blessed to see how each of our members humbly serves our great Savior each week. We are behind the scenes, yet we still have the pleasure of impacting others, and of supporting those that bring the good news to others!
Back to the word “Tetelestai.” Let us never give up hope that we can bring others into the fold of our Redeemer, to know that their sins are paid for in full. That they can know His peace and comfort, His friendship, and presence. Let us keep this word in the forefront of our minds. May it be like a candle that can never be extinguished, a light in the darkness for those in need. May we never tire of doing His good work.
My prayer for us:
Lord, please be with our Shoreline Production Team. May our hope always be in you. Help us to scatter seed through our work in technology and by supporting other ministries at Shoreline Church. Let us know in our hearts that although our work is behind the scenes, it is greatly important to the furtherance of Your Kingdom. May we trust and rely on You for Your guidance in this ministry. May we be a light to others and be pleasing to You always. Amen.

We recently had an upgrade done to our space in the main Worship Center at Shoreline. We had a small lighting installation done, which provides better lighting for our sermon video that we post here.
These upgrade also bring us a knew challenge;more involved programming of the Lighting Cues, we will now be employing the “Mark” command to help us automate some of the automated lighting processes.
