Kevin Harney Family Kevin Harney – Lead Pastor

Pastor Kevin Harney is a native Californian who grew up in Orange County, served churches in the Mid-West for the past twenty years, and is now excited to be living and serving in the Monterey area. He is passionate about the local church and has been serving in congregational ministry for all of his adult life. Kevin and his wife love to support the church around the U.S. and the world through writing and speaking. They have published numerous books, small group guides, and curriculum resources. Kevin’s most recent books are: Organic Outreach for Ordinary People, and Leadership from the Inside Out. Both published by Zondervan.

Kevin is a graduate of Azusa Pacific University (B.A.), Fuller Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity), and Western Theological Seminary (Doctor of Ministry). In warm weather he loves to unwind by walking a golf course with friends. When he can get near snow and a decent hill, Kevin loves to snow board.

Kevin and his wife Sherry just celebrated twenty-five years of marriage! Their three adult sons, Zach, Josh, and Nate are all college students and live in L.A., Chicago, and Grand Rapids, MI.

Howie Hugo – Founding Pastor

Pastor Howie knows what it is like on both sides of the pulpit, and brings a unique blend of business and ministry experience to Shoreline. Prior to Shoreline, for 14 years, he had maintained a dual career both speaking at churches and Christian conferences, and building a successful real estate brokerage and development business. Before real estate, Howie served on several pastoral staffs and directed the largest Campus Life ministry in the nation. He is a California native, earned a B.A. degree at Santa Clara University, and has also attended both Western Conservative Baptist and Talbot Seminaries. He was ordained in 1979.

Howie and his wife Linda have been married for over 28 years and have seven children: Jenny & Kenny Hogan, Thomas & Shannon Hugo, Monica & Mike Schweene, Heather & Tyler Ruddock, Katie, Jonathan and David.

Dennis McFadden Dennis McFadden – Executive Pastor

Dennis McFadden is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 28 years of clinical experience. Prior to joining Shoreline, Dennis was in private practice at Community Christian Counseling of Pleasanton for over thirteen years. He has taught and trained staffs and audiences in a wide variety of churches throughout Central and Northern California since 1981. His experience also includes over twelve years in program management and administration of human service programs, including mental health, drug and alcohol in three different California counties and two states.

Dennis lives in Monterey with Raine, his wife of 24 years. They have a blended family, including, “yours, mine, and ours,” four married children with five marvelously gifted and good looking grandchildren.

Ben Spangler – Pastor of Ministry Development

Ben Spangler and his programming team coordinate our Sunday morning services and events at the church. Ben has worked with many businesses and churches as a production and planning consultant, and has ran multimedia presentations for many organizations and events. For the past ten years, Ben and his family have been involved in full time ministry.

Ben and his wife Lacy have been married for 9 years, and live with their three children Ian, Kaiya, and Elyse in Seaside.

Ben Spangler
Dave Hopkins Dave Hopkins – Connections Pastor

Dave Hopkins is our Connections Pastor and directs Shoreline’s Connections Team in welcoming every person who walks through Shoreline’s doors. His team also helps people find their place within our church body, whether that is joining a small group, volunteering with the children’s ministry, or even greeting on Sunday mornings. It is evident that Dave’s passion is to help lost souls find the love of Christ and form a relationship with our Father. For 4 years he spearheaded our G-Force creative arts/worship program, recorded several CD’s, and toured as the leader of the worship band “Love out Loud”. Dave served for 3 years as Children’s Pastor and Connections Director at Mission Viejo Christian Church in Orange County and also has served as Worship Director for the children’s ministry at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest.

Dave is married to his lovely bride Martina and they have two kids, Sean and Olana. Dave and Martina currently reside in Seaside.

Keith Krueger – Student Ministries Pastor

Keith has a heart for our youth. Keith began with us as our Director of Middle School Ministry and now serves as our Student Ministries Pastor. He feels blessed to be a part of Shoreline Community Church’s Student Ministries. His philosophy is simple; today’s youth are looking for answers. Those answers are found in Jesus. Keith’s desire is to equip students to handle life’s challenges through their faith in Jesus. Everything that is done in Shoreline’s Student Ministries is done with God’s purposes in mind. Shoreline’s Student Ministries vision is based on 1 Timothy 4:12- Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.

Keith is married to Shannon, and has three daughters, Hannah and Alexandra and Elliyah.

Keith Krueger
Andrew manies Andrew Manies – Middle School Pastor

Andrew Manies serves as our Middle School and College pastor. Andrew has worked in youth ministry since 1999 and holds a Bachelors degree in Intercultural Studies with a minor in Youth Ministry and a Master in Church Growth Studies. Andrew and his wife Rebecca joined us here at Shoreline in January of 2007. The following June, they welcomed their daughter Katherine into their family. Andrew and Rebecca come to us from Lodi, California after spending their college years in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Roy Piña – Children’s Pastor

Roy comes to Shoreline with some 14 years of children’s ministry experience. A product of Bethany College and Global University, Roy is also a veteran Awana commander, Rorheim Institute trainer, a Certified Church Consultant and Charter Member of The Society for Church Consulting. Roy is committed to growing healthy families through strong church/family partnerships and providing a fun, safe atmosphere where children can grow in the grace of God.

A Monterey native, Roy and wife, Barb, were married in 1974, have successfully survived the raising and launching of their three children and are adapting to the role of grandparents for Crystal Catherine and Naomi Grace, both born in 2008.

Roy Pina
Langley Sharleen Langley – Music Coordinator

Shar Langley was born and raised in Monterey County and has served many years in ministry including international travel with several Missions teams. Shar attended Christ For The Nations Institute in Dallas, TX before moving to New York City. For ten years, Shar worked at UBS Investment Bank as the Corporate Travel Project Manager while volunteering in Music Ministry at Times Square Church, where she met her husband, Bobby. The Langley’s relocated to Monterey County in 2004. Shar has worked as the Music Coordinator at Shoreline since April 2007.

John Wineglass – Music Director

A native Washingtonian, John Wineglass has performed in several orchestras and chamber ensembles both in the U.S. and abroad, performing his first viola concerto with the DC Youth Orchestra in 1984 at 11 years old. John has achieved numerous music accreditation’s as well as 3 Emmy Awards and has performed with many Grammy-Award winning artists. His passion for music has also led him to develop proficiency as a gospel and contemporary jazz pianist. This wide array of musical prowess has afforded John opportunities to perform on 5 continents. He coordinates our worship sets as well as you will catch him onstage most Sunday mornings playing the keyboard, organ or violin. He has a passion and true gift for music.

John and his wife, the very talented Denise, live on the Peninsula with their daughter Abbie.

John Wineglass
Michelle Wilson Michelle Wilson – Director of Programming

Michelle comes to us from Seattle, WA as our Director of Programming and brings with her over 17 years of grocery business management to our Sunday service organization. She and her family have been attending Shoreline since 2005. Michelle’s desire is to see Shoreline as a place where people are able to come to a place of worship, where they can experience God’s love and those who don’t yet know God can come in and embrace His love. Her passion for prayer has helped to make Shoreline a place where we are available to everyone entering our doors. She brings a great energy and a new creative aspect to our service. Michelle is the glue that holds the different Sunday Service Ministries together.

Michelle resides in Monterey with her two sons, Michael and Ritchie.

Debra Federico – Community Outreach Director

Debra Federico has attended Shoreline Community Church since 1996 and has a passion for serving God, family and the community. Debra believes in putting God’s love in action and taking the Church outside of its walls. With the help of her fellow Shoreline parishioners, she desires to reach the lost and needy through acts of service, kindness and compassion in the local community. Debra loves that God has given her what she considers “her dream job”. Debra has strong ties to the Monterey Peninsula. She was raised in Monterey. Debra has worked for several school systems and for the City of Monterey’s Park and Recreation Commission.

Debra is married to David Federico. She has three adult children, Jennifer Brinker (Jon), Stephen Mercurio, Jr. and Jason Mercurio and two step children, Liana Deveso (Russell) and David Federico Jr. Debra enjoys spending time with her family, swimming, exercising and visiting her granddaughters, Georgia Rose. and Samantha Rae. The latest grandbaby, Lilly Rose Federico, was born in August 2009.

Karen Hughes – Volunteer Women’s Director

Karen Hughes has been faithfully attending Shoreline and serving with her husband Tom for over 13 years! She has facilitated the annual Women’s Retreats for the past 10 years and has had the honor of serving on our Leadership Team for 6 years. Karen has a heart for women, especially young moms, and has enjoyed serving on the MOPS (Mother’s of Preschoolers) Steering Team as a mentor mom. Karen and Tom were also part of the founding families who started Shoreline Preschool in 1997 in Toro Park, as a ministry of the church. Currently they serve together on the board for the new preschool site. Karen has a desire for God to work in and through her life and has been blessed with the ability to serve and volunteer her time as Women’s Ministry Director.

Karen is married to Tom and together they have 5 sons! Ryan and newly married wife Margaux, Adam, Michael, Kevin, and Blake.

Ben Huey – Technical Director

Ben is our Technical Director, he has been working in church audio since 1996, and started recording in 2000. In 2004 Ben gained a formal education in Audio Sciences from The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences, a school specializing in Recording and Live Sound technologies. Following School Ben worked at The Plant Recording Studios in Sausalito, Ca.

Since coming on staff, Ben has moved from the position of Audio Engineer, to the position of Technical Director. As Technical Director, Ben oversees the Production aspects of Shoreline; Sound, Video, and Lighting.

Ben and his wife of 6 years Erika live in Marina with their two children Alice (4) and Gwendalyn (newb).

Shannon Hugo Shannon Hugo – Director of Communications

Shannon Hugo is our Director of Communications in graphic and web design. She graduated from Azusa Pacific University in 2007 with a degree in Graphic Design and Youth Ministry. Shannon has been working at Shoreline since graduation, both volunteering with our High School ministry and on our full time staff. Her passion for the arts and the Church continues to grow as she learns more about God’s characteristics. Shannon has grown up in Monterey area but has spent some time in both Sacramento and New York during college studying at New York Center for Art & Media Studies (NYCAMS). She has been on several mission trips to other countries including Mexico, Nicaragua and Japan.

Recently married, Shannon and Thomas Hugo now live in Monterey, working and enjoying life together.

Erica and Danica Alvarado – Directors of Hospitality

Erica and Danica Alvarado have been attending Shoreline for 3 years. After volunteering for 2 years in the Hospitality ministry, they joined Shoreline staff in the fall of 2008 as Directors of Hospitality. They feel privileged to lead a team of volunteers who prepare Sunday’s Hospitality. They enjoy welcoming guests on Sunday mornings who stop by to grab their cup of coffee and favorite donut. They are thrilled to be part of a ministry that makes a lasting impression in the lives of those who attend Shoreline Community Church. Oh, and yes they are sisters; twins to be exact.

Nancy Koontz Nancy Koontz – Bookkeeper

Nancy Koontz is the church bookkeeper. She processes all monies going in and out of the church, balances the books and creates reports for the ministry heads and the leadership team. Nancy and her family have been attending Shoreline Church since 1997. She quickly started volunteering with the tape ministry and doing the books for then Missions Pastor, Craig Ludrick. She has been the bookkeeper at Shoreline for ten years. Before coming to Shoreline, Nancy worked in a bank for 2 years and was bookkeeper for a chiropractic office for 4 years.

Nancy lives mid Carmel Valley with her husband of 22 years, Alan. They have six children using the yours, mine and ours formula: Jason, Daniel, Joseph, Megan, Samantha and Grant.

Romel Retzlaff – Special Events and Projects Coordinator

Romel Retzlaff is our Special Events and Projects Coordinator. Romel has help several positions at our church, helping out in many areas. She now assists Ben Spangler, our Pastor of Ministry Development, in completing large special projects around the church. Romel also enjoys helping to Co-Coordinator our MOPS program; she loves and has a passion to help other young women in our community.

Romel holds a BA in Speech Communication and English, has taught Special Ed for 3 years and has served as a librarian for 3 years at Alisal High School. Romel has been attending Shoreline since 1999, and loves working with the Shoreline team. She has a genuine compassion and servant’s heart for all who need a little help. Romel is married to Jonathan and they have three adorable little boys, Christian, 5, and twins Joshua & Caleb, 3.

Jill Piercy Jill Shepherd Piercy – Shoreline Bookstore Manager

Jill Shepherd Piercy manages the Shoreline Bookstore and owns a popular Retail Boutique in Carmel Valley called Sunriver. She has been a member of Shoreline Community Church since the PG days. Her passion for retail and background in sales and marketing has given Jill the skills she needs to operate the Bookstore. Her love for Christ is the center of her life and working at Shoreline has given Jill a wonderful opportunity to grow in her relationship with God and serve Him.

Jill was raised in Carmel Valley now lives there with her two children Janice, 10, and Jack, 7.

Megan Huff – Connections and Community Outreach Administrator

Megan has a dual role on the Shoreline staff, working with both our Connections and Community Outreach Ministry. Megan helps coordinate their events and general administration within each department. Her duties include coordinating greeters for Sunday morning, setting up appointments for the Connections Team and managing the Small Group Resource Library. Megan grew up in Fremont, CA and graduated from CSU Monterey Bay with her degree in Communication in 2009.

Stephanie Maxey Stephanie Maxey – Connections and Small Group Coordinator

Stephanie Maxey serves on the Connections team by helping people find a place here at Shoreline. She believes finding community is important, and as a result, her work is concentrated on developing our Small Groups to ensure that everyone can find a place of encouragement and accountability in their walk with Christ. A southern girl at heart, Stephanie comes to Shoreline from North Carolina, having studied Child Development at Auburn University in Alabama. She is very thankful that God has led her and her husband to Shoreline and looks forward to helping as many people as possible become totally committed to Jesus Christ!

Stephanie has been married to her best friend, Craig Maxey, for over 3 years and was happy to follow him to Monterey to study at the Naval Post-Graduate School. They currently reside in Pebble Beach with their lab puppy, Murphy.

Nancy Cahalan – Family Therapy
Nancy Cahalan is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She has been in private practice full time on the Peninsula for 14 years. She is thrilled to be on staff at Shoreline. Please call her anytime with questions, for resources or if you would like to make an appointment.

Nancy Cahalan
Jonathan Ryan Jonathan Ryan – Student Ministries Director of Music and Arts

A native of Central California, Jonathan has been involved with various worship teams for over a decade. He has had the privilege of playing music throughout the country, and after studying music at Southeastern University in Florida he now serves as our Student Ministries Director of Music and Arts. His goal is to help high school and college students connect with God through relevant expressions of art and music. Jonathan leads the highly experimental Oxygen band each Sunday night at our college service.

In his spare time you may find him cooking up his latest recipe, or working on one of his paintings. Jonathan lives in Monterey and finds a good foggy day quite delightful.

Stephen Medina – High School Ministries Program Director

A boy amongst men, Stephen Medina is our High School Ministries Program Director. His main responsibilities include event planning and leading the Student Leadership Team. He has an abundance of passion for working with High School students. After volunteering for 3 years in Shoreline’s High School Ministry, Stephen moved to Hume Lake Christian Camps working full time for over a year. He moved back to Monterey County to work with the High School Ministry here at Shoreline in the Spring of ‘08. Stephen works to give High School students a fun place to hang out, but even more so a place for them to grow spiritually. At 24 years old, he won’t die soon (we hope).
