March Update in Community Outreach

On March 3, 2011, in Community Outreach, by CommunityOutreach

Greetings Community Outreach friends!

It is now March and with the hope of sunshine in our hearts here is what the Lord has planned for us!
WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO

  • A BIG THANK-YOU to everyone who came and helped out at the EL-Dorado Motel Clean-Up Day this last Saturday, February 26th! We were totally amazed at the outpouring of love, hard work and support from each of you that participated in making this day such a great event! It was a joy to have such a large group from many Shoreline ministries together. Both our Community Outreach Leaders and the residents at the Motel were so incredibly blessed by you all!
Check back next week for pictures from the event.
  • I-HELP
This particular night was a special night as we had a young man, Austin Myers, filming the evening for a documentary that he is doing for his school. There were some awesome testimonies given by the I-Help men. He was also filming everything from the clothes, shoes, etc. being set up for the men to take if needed to the kitchen preparing them their dinner. The documentary will be entered in a contest along with other documentaries about service projects, and if his documentary wins, the specific service project (in his case, I-HELP) will win a large sum of money to go towards their organization. Let’s pray for Austin as he goes about this process!

DONATIONS NEEDED
If every parishioner brought just one food item each Sunday what a difference we could make in our Food Pantry!  Let’s see if we can make it a goal for this year.  The Food Pantry is also in need of large paper bags with handles. Drop off any donations in the bins or at the booth on Sundays.

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND

→ Saturday March 5th
Monterey Pines Convalescent Home Visit – 9:30-11:30am
Come join us as we visit with the residents of the Monterey Pines Convalescent Home! We would love to have you join us in this great time of ministering to the residents there by having small worship service and great fellowship!

→ Sunday March 6th
Women’s Shelter Visit – 7:00-8:30pm
If you are a woman of Shoreline with a heart for other women, come join us as we minister to the women of the Hamilton House through the sharing of food, fellowship and fun! If this is something you’d like to participate in, please let us know! Call the church or email mkoontz@shorelinchurch.org for more information or directions.

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS MONTH

Easter Egg, Candy, & Book Drive
Starting this Sunday, March 6th, we will be collecting plastic Easter eggs, small pieces of candy and children’s Christian Easter books (in English or Spanish) in order to help the migrant children in our community celebrate Easter! Drop off donations at the booth or the bins. Then, join us on April 9th from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. as we prepare the donated items for delivery to the children. Questions? Contact Debra Federico at 831.655.0100 ext. 312 or dfederico@shorelinechurch.org.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT MONTH

Bags of Hope: available soon for purchase at the Community Outreach Booth!
Starting April 10th, the “Bags of Hope” that Kevin spoke about in January will be available for purchase on Sundays at Shoreline at the Community Outreach booth for $2 a bag. We are doing this so that people in our congregation will be given the opportunity of a great way to bless the homeless in our community. We have had many requests for this, and so we have found a way to make it happen, with many wonderful people working together to do so (including our very own Shoreline Junior Highers who stuffed the bags with the items and included wonderful handwritten notes of encouragement!).
Jim Clark has volunteered to be the organizer of this great project, and he is already putting together a team of people to sell the bags on Sunday mornings before, after, and in-between the services. If this interests you and you would like to serve in this way, please contact us at the church and let us know. Thank you!

Outreach in October!

On October 20, 2010, in Community Outreach, by CommunityOutreach

ONGOING EVENTS IN OUTREACH…

THIS WEEKEND, some of our wonderful volunteers in Community Outreach went out to the Monterey Pines Convalescent Hospital and the Hamilton House Women’s Shelter to minister to the residents there in ways that we hope will impact them most with the love of Christ.
Monterey Pines is a faithful group that is led by Jane Shaffer-MacDonald and Abraham Wilson. Abraham writes about what happens during these visits:

“The Monterey Pines Convalescent visits are conducted on the first and third Saturday of each month starting at 9:45 am and ending at 11:00 am. We fellowship with and average of 25 residents who attend our service. (there are approximately 100 residents at the facility.) We perform an actual Shoreline-type worship service comprised of 4 songs, prayer, scripture reading, 15-minute message and benediction. The intent of the service is to bring the Word of God to the residents at the various stages of their life and health. We are looking for volunteers who understand the importance of fellowship with the elderly and medically challenged. Having a good heart, compassionate spirit and understanding the importance of feeding all of God’s children is our primary function. Our most popular event is the Christmas service in which we provide presents for all attendees. On this day we give out lots of Bibles. We welcome all who would like to participate at any time of the year.”

Our next Convalescent Home Visit will be on Saturday, November 6th, from 9:45am-11:30am!
If you would like to come with us, are interested in getting involved with the Convalescent Home visits, or would simply like more information, please contact us at the church by phone or email and we will get you connected!

Our visits to the Hamilton House Women’s Crisis Shelter happens every first and third Sunday night. We just went this last Sunday night and had a fantastic time! These women who live in the house have gone through a lot and have come from some very different, but all very difficult life situations. We visit them and minister to them in various ways – from training times on how to budget finances, write a resume, succeed in a job interview, or apply makeup, to Bible studies and cookies and gifts and fellowship. Just spending time with the women does so much, but we are always looking for women in our church body who have specific gifts or talents or can use their career to help these women in transition. If you have some kind of skill, passion, gift, or career that you believe could benefit the women of the Hamilton House, or if you would just like to come visit with us, please contact us at the church. We show up around 7 p.m. and stay until around 8:30; it is an amazing thing to see God work through the women of Shoreline to minister to these precious ladies at the Hamilton House.

Our next Women’s Shelter Visit will be on Sunday, November 7th, from 7:00-8:30pm!
If you would like to come with us, are interested in getting involved with the Women’s Shelter visits, or would simply like more information, please contact us at the church by phone or email and we will get you connected!
COMING UP SOON is our Annual Halloween Family Festival, in which our Community Outreach Ministry plays a huge role! We have the privilege of organizing and taking on the always-popular “Trunk O’ Treat” feature, which serves as a mini replacement of door-to-door trick-or-treating. But, instead of houses decorated in Halloween fare, it will bet the trunks of your cars! Sign up at the booth to reserve a spot for your vehicle to be a part of this fun event! Or, you may consider signing up to be sign up to be a part of the trunk o’ treat committee, which will help with set up, tear down, and judging on best decorated trunk! Either way, this event will be one you will not want to miss!

What’s Up with Community Outreach?

On August 31, 2009, in Community Outreach, by CommunityOutreach

HERE’S what’s going on with the Community Outreach team!

A huge THANK YOU to the volunteers who helped serve breakfast to our new friends on Friend’s Day. It was a rousing success and could not have gone so well had it not been for the service of those involved.

THIS Sunday, September 6th marks our first of two visits to the Women’s Shelter for the month of September. Accompany us as share our talents and encouraging words with women in a time of transition.

On Saturday, September 12th from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. we will be blessing the residents of the El Dorado Motel in Salinas. We will be helping them by cleaning and maintaining the facilities. We are currently in need of trucks for this event.

For more information on these and other opportunities to serve, please contact Debra Federico at dfederico@shorelinechurch.org or Megan Huff at mhuff@shorelinechurch.org.
