Growth Group Discussion:
Video Based Questions

    1. Read Ephesians 5:22-33. What does this say about the biblical perspective on marriage? Are there any relationships that are flourishing in your life right now? Are there others that are not going as well? How could this relate to your relationship with God?
    2. What expectations did you have (or do you have) of marriage before you were married? When was a time when you felt close to God as a friend?
    3. How did (or how do you think) those expectations get radically challenged through your relationship?
    4. How does sharing your life with someone else cause you to grow in unique areas of your life? Mention some of the personal ways you have seen this change in your life.
    5. Why do you think people so often default to the conclusion that they married the wrong person when things get tough, rather than concluding that maybe their perception of marriage may be off or even unbiblical?

Sermon Based Questions

    1. Tell about a marriage you have observed that you feel really reflects the desire God has for a man and a woman to love, serve, encourage, and learn from each other.
    2. What are some of the factors in today’s world that make it hard to build and maintain a healthy and God-honoring marriage? How can we fight against these?
    3. Read: Genesis 1:26-31. What do you think it means to say that men and women are created “In the image” of God?
    4. Read: Ephesians 5:21-33.. What are examples of mutual submission (“submit to one another”) in a marriage?
    5. If you are married, what is one practical way you can honor and serve your spouse in the coming week? If you are single, what is one way you can encourage, support, or cheer on a married couple God has placed in your life?

Bible Verses and Quotes for thought:

Genesis 1:27-28 – “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Matthew 19:4-6 – “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

1 Corinthians 7:1-16, Colossians 3:18-19, Hebrews 13:4-7

“The state of marriage is one that requires more virtue and constancy than any other…it is a perpetual mortification…From this thyme plant, in spite of the bitter nature of its juice, you may be able to draw and make the honey of a holy life” – Francis de Sales

“If we find that the same kinds of challenges face every marriage, we might assume that God designed a purpose in this challenge that transcends something as illusory as happiness.” – – Gary Thomas

“A man doesn’t own his marriage; he is only the steward of his wife’s love.” – – Edwin Louis Cole (Ed Cole)

“God created marriage. No government subcommittee envisioned it. No social organization developed it. Marriage was conceived and born in the mind of God.” – – Max Lucado

Summer Romance Off to a Great Start!

On June 8, 2010, in Small Groups, by Community Groups

It was great to see those of you who attended the kick-off for Summer Romance! Andy and Terri did a great job of sharing what God has placed on their hearts regarding marriage.

We hope that you will be able to make it to all three remaining weeks: June 14, June 21, and June 28.

If you are checking kids into childcare, please try to get there at least 10 minutes early. There is also a small fee for our childcare services to be paid at the fellowship center check-in table. We are asking for a donation of $5.00 per child per event. You are welcome to pay in advance for the rest of the series.

If you don’t have kids, please still try to get to the church by 6:25 p.m. so we can start right at 6:30 p.m. You are welcome to bring a bite to eat or a Starbucks, but please try to be there on time.

Please feel free to share any feedback about your experiences or anything that God is doing in your marriage. We would love to make this program the very best it can be! We are praying about doing this again in the Fall so your comments, suggestions and success stories will really help!

You are also welcome to bring couples that you know who could benefit from this experience. Each week will have exciting new horizons to experience together!

May God richly bless you and your marriages.
